In my paper, I discuss the results of individual observations of pupils aged 13-14. These children undertook an attempt to solve problems which were designed in order to bring about an inductive type of generalizing. The main aim of the study was to classify typical methods of proceeding, which represent the pupils’ ways of reasoning and to determine what influence a particular method of proceeding...
The harmonic series is one of the most celebrated infinite series ofmathematics. From a pedagogical point of view, the harmonic series providesa wealth of opportunities. Applications such as Gabriel’s wedding cake andEuler’s proof of the divergence of prime numbers can lead to some verynice discussions. The main idea of this article is to survey some of unusual, insightful and inspiring divergence...
As far as teaching practice in mathematics is concerned, we usedifferent methods, forms and tools, which enable pupils to acquire both theoreticalknowledge and practical skills more efficiently. Stanisław Drózdz(1939-2007) was a concrete poet, who, in his work, used not only words, butalso visual art. Poetry, art and mathematics are apparently distant domains, yet when I saw Drózdz‘s works, I noticed...
In 1969, Polish mathematician and logician, Alfred Tarski asked ifall the identities true in the set of natural numbers involving the constant 1,addition, multiplication, and exponentiation can be derived from the elevenaxioms that are taught at the high school level (High School Identities). In1981 Alex Wilkie negatively solved this problem by constructing an identitythat cannot be proved using these...
We present a list of geometric problems with solutions that lead to knownor less known means. We also prove, by elementary means, some property for so-calledquasi-arithmetic means. We use the proved result to justify some inequalities betweenthe means.
In this paper, we identify the phenomenon of false conviction. Weanalyze the definition of false conviction and provide the typology of falseconvictions, including their logical, geometric, cognitive and methodologicaltypes. Every type of false conviction is exemplified by empirical data.
An axiomatic approach to Non-standard Analysis by E. Nelsonis presented in a simplified form. The main aim of the article is strictly thepopularization of NSA, and not its foundations. No special preparation inmathematical logic is required from the reader but it is assumed that he(she) is familiar with elementary calculus and linear algebra.
The formulas for the m-th iterate $(m \in N)$ of an arbitrary homographicfunction H are determined and the necessary and sufficient conditions for a solution ofthe equation $y_{m+1} = H(y_m)$, to be an infinite n-periodic sequence are given. Based on the results from this paper one can easily determine some particular solutionsof the Babbage functional equation
In this research, three problems faced by Leonardo Pisano, called Fibonacci, are dealt with. The main purpose is to show that history of mathematics can offerinteresting material for mathematics education. The approach to the use of history ofmathematics in mathematics education cannot be merely historical, but adapted to theneeds of the explanations in a classroom. In the course of this paper, the...
